Retriever

Much like Herding Dogs, Retrievers look to their handlers for direction. Perhaps this is a common element that leads both of these groups to be such excellent participants in team related dogsport today. While a few breeds, like the Golden and Labrador dominate the scene both as pets and hunting dogs, other older breeds are similarly blessed if of somewhat different, even quirky temperament.

Spaniel

Soft as a Spaniel’s ear or Spaniel’s eye or Spaniel’s expression are indications of how gentle a face we have come to expect from our Spaniels. This has resulted in the popularity of several in this group as devoted companions. Compact with generally silky coats they require minimal grooming (as a group), wonderful to the touch and easy to travel with. Remarkably intelligent and happy, many prove to be fabulous companions once reared with appropriate techniques.

Pointer-Setter

Within the Sporting Group, much of the elegance and glamour belongs to the Pointers-Setters, even today, in the show ring, their appearance is eye-catching. Exquisite lines and poised beauty that can only appear in something that works while still, is always popular. Not to be fooled though, Pointer-Setters are very high energy and require high levels of mental and physical stimulation for long term health.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a true dwarf breed, that is a mutation took place which truly makes the Corgi a big dog that is small. This is apparent to anyone who has lived with, loved and met a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Their confidence and self satisfaction is rarely seen in a dog of this size. This is not to say they are arrogant (though as cute as they are they are certainly entitled). Generally an easy dog to live with, the Corgi enjoys popularity in many circles including as a pet, for pet therapy and many dog sports. A home that has difficulty raising and training a PWC truly needs to consider pursuing more education and knowledge since this breed is typically quite trainable and biddable.

Personaility – Behavior – Training

Energy Level: very active.
General Nature: Outgoing, friendly and bold.
with Children: Generally very good if provided with proper socialization, well behaved children and proper supervision
with other pets: Generally good but might be inclined to herd animals and kids.
with dogs: Generally very good.

Socialization requirements: moderate: inclined to shyness if lacking in extensive positive life experience.
Ideal home characteristics: One that can enjoy the energy and enthusiasm that the Pembroke brings to all things. Minimal grooming requirements and compact size makes them a good candidate for my families and lifestyles. Quintessential big dog in a small dog body.
Temperament Notes: Strong work ethic, high energy, active, happy, alert, friendly, outgoing.
Training requirement: moderate: socialization and basic manners but would enjoy much more.
Trainer notes: The Corgi is remarkably alert and quick for a dog with such short legs. Additionally they are very excited about having anything to do,especially when it involves their people. They are intelligent with remarkable stamina and a generally alert nature. So, in other words, they make a great training partner in virtually any endeavor that you think is fun. But by all means, make sure it IS fun for both of you. The Corgi is relatively sensitive and easily demoralized by a trainer that is frustrated or unhappy.
